| Judas Priest Biography:
Formed by guitarist K.K. Downing and bassist Ian Hill circa 1970 in Birmingham, England (which also spawned Black Sabbath not much earlier), the band gigged consistently around England for most of '71-'73. Hill invited his fiance's brother Rob Halford to sing for the band, and finally they started making headway. By '74 second guitarist Glenn Tipton was added, and a deal with small UK indie Gull followed. The first LP was a disappointment, but the band-produced second, Sad Wings Of Destiny, was a vast improvement; an international deal with CBS followed. Their fourth studio effort for CBS, British Steel (1980), yielded the hits "Living After Midnight" and "Breaking The Law." The more tepid "Hot Rockin'" followed on Point Of Entry , but it was the next LP, Screaming For Vengeance , that made the band international superstars. The LP went platinum domestically, as did subsequent LPs and much of the back catalog. |

Judas Priest enjoyed a steadily building career with few downers, save for being dragged to court in '86 following the death of two fans whose families accused the band and their label of putting subliminal messages in their version of Spooky Tooth's "Better By You, Better Than Me." The judge dismissed the charges. In '92, Halford abruptly left the band to form Fight, while the remaining Priests assembled the impressive anthology MetalWorks '73-'93 . Since then, Halford has abandoned Fight and signed with Trent Reznor 's Nothing label, while Downing, Hill and Tipton claim to be retooling the group with a new singer. |
